Treatment Facility Offers Free Lifesaving Opioid Overdose Reversal Kits — No Questions Asked

Indiana Center for Recovery offers free naloxone 24/7, removing barriers to lifesaving overdose prevention tools, ahead of Overdose Awareness Day.

TERRE HAUTE, IN, UNITED STATES, August 12, 2026 /EINPresswire.com/ -- Anyone can anonymously access free naloxone and fentanyl test strips around the clock from an outdoor distribution box at Indiana Center for Recovery Alcohol & Drug Rehab Terre Haute, with no questions asked. The facility partnered with Overdose Lifeline, which provided the box.

Throughout August, Indiana Center for Recovery is raising awareness about overdose prevention and the lifesaving role of naloxone in recognition of International Overdose Awareness Day on Aug. 31.

Naloxone is an opioid overdose reversal medication commonly sold under the brand name Narcan. During an opioid overdose, opioids can slow or stop a person’s breathing. Naloxone temporarily blocks the effects of opioids at receptors in the brain, helping restore breathing. It can reverse the effects of an overdose involving any opioid, including fentanyl, heroin and prescription opioids. Because naloxone’s effects are temporary, emergency medical help is still necessary after it is administered.

The need for accessible overdose prevention tools remains urgent. Although drug overdose deaths in Indiana have declined each year since peaking in 2021, the state still ranked 16th in the nation by total overdose deaths in 2025. According to provisional data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Indiana recorded 1,395 overdose deaths, 838 of which, or about 60%, involved opioids.

The outdoor box is part of a harm reduction approach that provides practical tools to reduce overdose risk and keep people alive, even if they are not yet ready to enter treatment.

“Sometimes people are not ready to stop yet, so if they are going to be using, we want them to be as safe as possible,” said Lora Nesting, peer recovery specialist. “Preventing an overdose can give someone the chance to seek recovery when they are ready.”

Corey Coogan spent years trying to get sober. Then, she overdosed in a suicide attempt. “Narcan saved my life. I wouldn’t be here today without it,” Coogan said. Naloxone gave her a second chance at life.

Coogan completed the outpatient program at Indiana Center for Recovery in Terre Haute. Now she has nine months of continuous sobriety. She is active in a 12-step program, works full time and is putting herself through cosmetology school. She is hopeful about the future. “My higher power has a plan for me,” Coogan said.

Stories like Coogan’s show that having naloxone available can mean the difference between a fatal overdose and the opportunity to recover.

“Naloxone provides a critical window of time during an opioid overdose, but someone has to have it nearby and know how to use it,” said Dr. Michael Kane, chief medical officer of Indiana Center for Recovery. “Making naloxone available anonymously removes a barrier and gives anyone the ability to save a life.”
